How a Simple Habit Can Help You to Stop Procrastinating

Are you a chronic procrastinator?

We all procrastinate. Mundane tasks like sorting through emails and updating software are just a few of the things you’ve probably hit pause on more than once.

When we have a looming task over our heads that we don’t want to do, our solution is to do it tomorrow. And then tomorrow comes and we repeat the same thing. Before you know it, the deadline is the next day, and you haven’t even started.

Next, you find yourself locked in panic mode. You work tirelessly to complete the task and obsessively check the time. Your sheer determination and focus might be enough to pull it off. Or, you could end up with lacklustre results that pale in comparison to what you could’ve achieved if you only started sooner.

Sound familiar?

I was faced with a similar dilemma recently. I knew I needed to create a new Mi-PA Training Academy. Well, if I’m honest, I probably should’ve sat down to work on the training academy a while ago. But, I didn’t. I procrastinated. The thought of creating lots of new content and putting hours into it was enough to make me put it off time and time again.

But, low and behold, I came to my senses. And, believe it or not, it was a client (or two) that inspired me to stop procrastinating and start getting things done. The solution is so simple that I’m surprised I’ve only started it now.

If you’re a master procrastinator (like billions of other people on the planet), keep reading to discover how one simple habit can help you to stop procrastinating!

Lessons Learned

Overcoming the persistent habit of delaying tasks isn’t easy. Many people confuse procrastination with laziness. But they’re entirely different. Laziness is when you’re unwilling to work. Procrastination is the act of postponing a task in favour of something we deem as a lot more enjoyable or “urgent.”

Procrastination is a habit.

And, I knew it was a habit I needed to break. A few things happened in the business that led me to see the error of my ways and the solution.

One of our clients booked an entire weekend at a hotel so she could finish writing her book. Another client regularly reserves time out of her week to sort out what she needs to get done. She makes it a priority to carve time in her diary to do the things that she knows she would procrastinate on if given the chance.

What both these clients are doing isn’t anything remarkable or ground-breaking. But, it is eye-opening. It got me thinking about my own schedule. Was there any time in my diary that I could assign for important tasks? Could I find a way to carve time to get the Mi-PA Training Academy done?

As it turns out, there was! Like you, I’m in control of how I spend my time. So, I thought about how I could put my time to better use. And, it just so happened that I had an upcoming business trip.

Yes, I would’ve preferred to lounge on the beach and soak up the warm sunshine. But, I had to put productivity at the frontline. Plus, it wasn’t a holiday. It was a business trip. So, I added a few extra days onto my trip where I was able to get my work done without any distractions.

Carving Time to Get Important Tasks Done

By extending my time away, I was able to create lots of great content for the Mi-PA Training Academy. I didn’t pack any fancy equipment with me on the trip. But, I didn’t let that stop me or use it as an excuse to stop working. I got my iPhone out and recorded a few videos covering the important topics I wanted to train my team on. Now, I’ve got a good selection of valuable videos that I can use to help streamline the onboarding process of new staff.

Setting time aside to focus on completing the tasks that you keep procrastinating is one of the best ways to actually get things done. It takes a lot of will-power and self-discipline, but it’s worth it.

My challenge to you is to think about the task that you’re procrastinating right now. And, don’t kid yourself and immediately claim that you aren’t delaying something. Whether it’s a task at work, at home or in your personal life, we’ve all got something we keep putting off.

Think about the things you keep talking about but never get done. Now, take out your diary or calendar and choose a time this week to get those things done. It could be a Wednesday morning, Friday afternoon, or maybe you need to dedicate an entire weekend to complete the task. When you assign time to focus on one specific job that you know you need to do, you’re much more inclined to do it.

Once that day comes and you actually get the tasks done that you said you would, you’ll be hungry for more. So, you’ll assign another time block to get the next task done and so on. It’s like a catalyst in your business that kickstarts productivity and kicks procrastination out in the cold!
